A descriptive nickname applied to a tall or physically imposing ancestor, or sometimes to the elder of two men sharing a name. Groot means 'great' or 'large' in Dutch. The prefix de is a definite article, making this literally 'the great one.' One of the 20 most common surnames in the Netherlands.

Widespread across the Netherlands; particularly common in North Holland and South Holland provinces.
Notable Bearers
Hugo Grotius (Hugo de Groot, 1583–1645), the Dutch jurist and philosopher considered the founder of modern international law. His 1625 work De Jure Belli ac Pacis remains a foundational text in legal scholarship.
