Dutch surname · meaning, origin and genealogy
A topographic surname from zee, the Dutch word for sea — denoting a family that lived near the sea or on the coast. In the Netherlands, with its extensive North Sea coastline and internal waterways, sea-derived surnames were natural for coastal communities. Van Zee (sometimes Van de Zee or Van der Zee) was taken by families in the fishing ports and coastal towns of Holland, Zeeland, and Friesland. The name also appears in the form Vanderzee in North America, carried by Dutch emigrants to New Netherland (modern New York) in the 17th century.
Associated with the coastal provinces of North Holland, South Holland, Zeeland, and Friesland. Dutch emigrants carried the name to New Netherland (New York), New Amsterdam, and later to South Africa.
James Van Der Zee (1886–1983), American photographer of Dutch-American descent, celebrated for his documentation of the Harlem Renaissance — one of the most important photographers of 20th-century African-American life. Also: Dutch Golden Age mariners bearing the name in VOC records.

Van Zee families in coastal Holland are documented in the Noord-Hollands Archief in Haarlem and the South Holland provincial archives. The New Netherland Project at the New York State Library holds records of 17th-century Dutch settlers using variants of this name. South African Van de Zee families should check the GSSA.
